First day of 1st Grade

I've had a lot of fun with the boy this summer, but we've hit a rough patch this month and I think we both need a break from each other. That break finally came today.

Jonathan survived the first day of 1st grade, eating lunch at school and TWO recesses. That was his favorite part.

What's for Dinner?

I got this off Kathryn's blog, and I'm only posting it so that you all will post what you had for dinner and I can get some ideas. So, here is Kathryn's idea...

Here's the challenge:

1) Photograph exactly what you had for dinner last night. (even if it's a pint of ice cream & 4 cheese puffs, which I highly recommend)

2) Share the recipe & photo.

3) Let us know something fun/interesting/weird/amusing that happened during this dinner or the making of it.

So, here's what we had for dinner tonight. Not only did we have this for dinner, we had this for lunch too. Talk about killing two birds with one stone (or one Costco Pizza). Now, if I'm willing to put this out there for everyone to see, none of you have an excuse for not posting your dinners.

Recipe:
1. Call Costco and order pizza.

2. Drive to Costco.

3. Stand in line for 1/2 hour.

4. Take pizza home and enjoy.

Soccer

Jonathan started soccer this week. This is his first time playing and he's doing really well for a beginner. He even almost made a goal! I'm proud of my little guy for trying so hard.

He also had a cheering section for his first game. Colleen, Mike, Christina and Kathleen all came down to watch him play. Jonathan was so excited to have his own cheer leaders.

If you have never watched little kids play soccer it is very entertaining. They ALL want the ball and they crowd so closely around it that they only end up kicking each other. Those shin guard were definitely a good investment.

The Final Countdown

In exactly one week I will turn 30. Or as Jonathan so politely pointed out "It's Mom's birthday and she's turning old." Don't worry, this isn't going to turn into some long introspective post reflecting on my last 30 years. Really, I have no special thoughts on turning 30. Maybe I'm shallow, but the only thing that comes to mind is that I can use this to get a really good present out of Russ.

So, inspired by Rachel's post about Michael and Hannah cleaning their rooms, I tried this tactic with Jonathan. Here's sort of how it went...

Jonathan: "Mom, will you buy me (insert toy he can't live without here)?

Me: "What do you think you can do to make me want to buy you (insert toy he will die without here)?" I go on to explain that his attitude lately has not been very respectful.

(this is where everything starts to go very wrong)

Jonathan the negotiator: "How many days do I have to be nice so you will buy me the toy?"

It all went downhill from there. Huge tantrum and early bedtime last night. Rachel, you may have heard said tantrum at your house.

This has been our life for the last several weeks, and I'm at a loss. I try things I read in parenting books and you know what? They don't tell you how to deal with a negotiator! So, can you see why I am not at all sad that school starts in a little over a week?
