A moment of silence, please...

for the loss of my voice. I've learned today that it is very hard to yell in a whisper and kids think it's very funny when mom loses her voice. And if you tried to call me today and I didn't answer it is because Russ wasn't around to speak for me. So, if you need to talk to me, you'll have to leave a message with my new secretary. It's only fitting since I've been his secretary for the last 10 years.

Since I'm being so supportive of the school...

I thought I'd mention the Box Tops Marketplace. I never realized how many online stores I use that will donate to your school when you shop there. Places like Disney Shopping, Barnes & Noble, Gap, FTD.com and Proflowers. Southwest Airlines is on there! And I just spent a LOT of money with them before I knew about this. Walmart is on there too, but they only donate 1/2 a percent of what you spend. Cheapskates! Anyway, go find out for yourself and earn some money for your school.

Stitches out

Yep, they're gone. The nurse taped the stitches to a stick for Jonathan to keep. Let's hope it's a long time before we have any more injuries.

Quirks

I got tagged by Rachel to describe 6 unspectacular quirks about myself. This is very hard. I've been thinking about it on and off the entire day. What makes me me? And sometimes it's not so nice to think about.

1. I will do almost anything to avoid housework. I will volunteer my time at school, in the community, donate blood, shop (this is my favorite), read, spend too much time on the computer, etc... This means that when my house needs to be neat and tidy (which it rarely is) I have to spend a couple hours straight cleaning the whole darn thing. Also there are some household tasks I will negotiate my way out of. (Bathrooms!) It's a good thing I have a husband who is willing to negotiate.

2. I enjoy anything crafty and creative. I love to look at craft boutiques and copy ideas because I can't bring myself to pay for something I could make myself.

3. I used to be scared of kids. Before I had my own child, I was very awkward around children. Being asked to substitute in the nursery terrified me. Yes, those little tiny toddlers scared the heck out of me. As Jonathan has grown I've become more comfortable with each age group. And many of you know that those nursery age kids are now some of my favorites. But as a teen and young adult, I was absolutely terrified of young children.

4. I love just hanging out with my family. We don't always have a set family night, due to Russell's work schedule, but nearly every night he is home we spend together. We also like to spend time with our extended family. I love when my parents and sisters visit (or we visit them) because every night is game night. I also play video games with my son. And by myself. I've had to lay off the Wii since I hurt my arm and I miss it. I love my video games.

5. I love animals. I'm allergic to almost all of them, though I can tolerate dogs if they're kept clean and hair short. We will probably always have a dog. We originally got the dogs to keep me company at night when Russ was at work. I feel safe having two relatively large barking animals around. They're also good for warming your feet in the winter.

6. I'm not good at finishing what I start. I always have great intentions of say following an exercise program, eating right, finishing a big craft project. But, unless I am going to disappoint someone else by not finishing, I find that I let it fall by the wayside. I always intend to pick it up later, but something else gets in the way. So, I have many an unfinished project in my basement or an idea in my head that has never come to fruition.

Now you probably know more than you care to know about me. I tag anyone who wants to try this themselves.

Picture of the stitches and Mom's a trashpicker

Wanna see a picture of Jonathan's stitches? C'mon, you know you do. Did I have you scared there for a minute?
Kerri did ask for a picture of the stitches and I did take one, but I'm not posting it here because I don't think anyone wants to see it. Well, except Kerri. But Jonathan drew his own picture and wrote a sentence about it.

See this?

It was once in (well on top of) the garbage can at the gas station by my house. I have lowered myself to trash picking for box tops. In my defense, I didn't actually pick through the garbage. The box was on top and I just happen to know that Fruit by the Foot boxes have box tops.

Hey, I still haven't stooped to asking the sample lady at Costco if I can have her boxtops. (I heard a dad do that one)

My Poor Baby

Tonight Jonathan was playing with the neighborhood kids and tripped over a tree stump. Either the stump or something near it cut a gash in his side. I'll spare you the gory details, it really grossed me out and it was relatively minor. He needed 3 stitches and is now home telling Grandma all about his adventure over the phone. I have a feeling this is only the beginning of life with a boy. Really, we are pretty lucky to have made it 6 years without needing stitches.

Fun Run

Fun and Run. Two words I do not think belong in the same sentence. Still, Jonathan's school does this every year and the kids seem to love it.
If only I could bottle that energy. Then I might be able to put fun and run in the same sentence.

Random Updates and Happy Birthday!

First things first. Happy Birthday to Aunt Kerri! (yesterday) (If she even sees this since she never comments.)

Second. Jonathan has learned to ride his scooter. I know that doesn't seem too exciting, but for so long he has been anti- scooter or bike. He still won't try his bike, but at least he has decided to use the scooter. I attribute this completely to peer pressure. And I'm okay with that. For now.

Third. Jonathan and Hannah decorated our driveway a few days ago and I found this on the mailbox

Literacy, Love & Logic, and the Green-eyed Monster

This is what happens when I don't blog for a few days. You get all my random thoughts in one big jumble.
Last night was a literacy night at school for the parents of 1st graders. I know, I know, Jonathan is a good reader. I had at least two people question why I was even there. But just because a kid can read, doesn't mean he always wants to. So, I went and they had some fun ideas for getting kids to read, which I really need. Before you read the book, discuss the plot. Make it sound like a movie trailer, really play it up so they want to know what happens. Also, let them look at the pictures before they start reading. This goes back to the movie trailer thing and getting them excited. Maybe this is all no brainer stuff to some of you, but it never occurred to me to make reading fun. I've always been the reading nazi. Give him the book, set the timer for 10 minutes and that's it.

I don't even know why I'm bringing this up, I don't want a pity party or anything, but that green eyed monster showed up unexpectedly last night. I noticed that a mom I got acquainted with last year (who already has 3 or 4 very young children) was obviously pregnant again. I have no idea why this particular woman's pregnancy brought out the jealousy, but it did. And I felt bad about that. Now, so you don't feel sorry for me, we are making good progress in getting approved for adoption. Russ and I both have interviews next week with our case worker.

And speaking of parenting, I started a Love & Logic class tonight. Past experience with certain L&L parents (who shall remain nameless) has kind of turned me off to this type of parenting, but I discovered tonight that you don't have to carry it as far as some people do. I'm all for responsible children, but parents need to act responsible too. Anyway, I can see how their ideas will help me deal with my crazy 6 going on 13 year old if I am disciplined enough to follow thru. Wish me luck.

And just for fun, here are some pictures of Jonathan and Russ fighting over the TV remote. I guess sometimes I do have more than one child.

Playing with actions

Rachel gave me some actions for Photoshop Elements tonight and I just had to show off the results.
This first picture came from one of my Grandma's old slides that I scanned a while back. It worked well for this action since it has no people in it.

The first action I ran was Joki Deep Color Pop.

Then I thought it was still a little dark so I ran the other action, Phaunt Sunshine.
I know they all still look a lot alike, but there really is a difference. Still, I think there may be too much red. But then, I always tend to overdo it when I take the red out. So I was a little cautious about that this time.

The next one is a picture of Jonathan that was too dark. I used the Sunshine action and I really like it now.

Before

After. I did fix those lovely red eyes before running the action. Just in case you thought the action did that.

Which Twilight character are you?

I got this quiz from Kelly's blog.
Just glad I'm not Bella...
You scored as a Esme Cullen
You're Esme. The sweet, loving, mother figure of the Cullen clan. You're extremely happy that Edward has found Bella and are very careful not to scare her off.

Our bulimic dog

Warning: If you see this dog, do not give her treats.

She looks sweet and innocent, but trust me on this. Do not feed her. She has special (ie: expensive) food for sensitive stomachs. When unsuspecting children give her treats bad things happen.

Interesting...

I don't want to get political or controversial here, but I think we're all tired of paying nearly $4 a gallon for gas. I just found it interesting that we have not progressed at all in over 30 years.
I found this ad from the 1970's on Found in Mom's Basement. By the way, this is a really fun site to browse. http://pzrservices.typepad.com/vintageadvertising/2008/05/eerily-familiar.html

Mad Libs story

Thank you to all who participated (humored me) in this little game. I ended up with 2 extra words, so if some of your words are missing, that is why.

Well, we bought the "Family parasail Plan" from our mobile beachball company. Boiling mistake! At just 4 cents a minute, it seemed like a turbulent idea. The first call was from my sister saying she didn't make the catching squad at school. She then tasted for an hour while I was trying to watch my ubiquitous TV show, American Baby Wipes. Then my phone rang again and it was my frumpy brother, asking me to pick him up from Christmas ornament practice. On the way home, my mother called and asked me to pick up some kittens at the neighborhood reality show, and my father called asking where the care was because he had to get to a very important interfaith theocracy by six o'clock! I think I might "lose" my squishy phone tomorrow and tell the company what they can do with their "Family Hippity Hop"!
